The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued a white alert for the southern atolls, including Laamu Atoll to Addu City, warning residents of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching up to 40 mph. The alert is in effect from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM today, May 14, 2025.
This warning follows the onset of the southwest monsoon, which officially began over the Maldives on May 7. Since then, various regions have experienced intensified weather conditions, prompting multiple alerts.
The MET has reported that the current weather system is expected to bring significant rainfall and thunderstorms to the affected areas. Residents are advised to exercise caution, especially when traveling, and to stay updated with the latest weather information.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also indicated that conditions are favorable for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon over the south Arabian Sea, Maldives, and Comorin area in the coming days.
As the monsoon season progresses, the MET continues to monitor the situation closely and urges the public to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories.
