The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced the completion of quay wall construction as part of the ongoing Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project — a major infrastructure initiative aimed at modernizing Malé’s waterfront road network.
According to MTCC, work on the stormwater management system is now underway. The system is designed to improve the area’s drainage capacity and reduce flooding risks, a frequent concern in the capital during heavy rainfall.
The redevelopment project covers the resurfacing of approximately 830 meters of road, the installation of 737 meters of sheet piles to reinforce the quay wall, and the construction of new sub-base layers to strengthen the road foundation. The plan also includes a dedicated pedestrian lane and a modern drainage network to improve road safety and accessibility for both vehicles and pedestrians.
MTCC confirmed that the quay wall construction was completed on schedule, and that asphalt laying will begin once the ongoing drainage and stormwater management components are finalized.
The MVR 144.5 million project, awarded to MTCC in April 2025, forms part of the government’s broader initiative to enhance Malé’s urban infrastructure under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Practical works on the project began on August 21, with completion expected within one year and three months. The area from Izzuddin Jetty to the fish market remains temporarily closed to the public while works continue.
MTCC emphasized that the redevelopment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu will play a key role in easing traffic congestion, improving pedestrian movement, and strengthening flood resilience along Malé’s northern waterfront.
In a statement, the company reaffirmed its commitment to completing the remaining works “efficiently and sustainably,” ensuring the project meets both functional and environmental standards for modern urban development in the capital.
