MTCC Expands Portfolio with Major Land Reclamation and Coastal Protection in Naivaadhoo

By Ahmed Ashraf Published August 25, 2025

The Government of Maldives has officially signed an agreement with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to undertake the land reclamation and coastal protection project in HDh. Naivaadhoo, marking a major step forward in safeguarding the island’s shoreline and creating new land for community development.

The contract was formalized in a ceremony attended by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and senior government officials. Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muttalib signed on behalf of the government, while MTCC Managing Director DCP (Retired) Ahmed Saudhee represented the company.

The project, once implemented, is expected to significantly enhance Naivaadhoo’s resilience against coastal erosion while expanding usable land for housing, public infrastructure, and economic activity. Land reclamation and shoreline protection have become a cornerstone of national development, as the Maldives continues to face the dual challenges of rapid population growth and climate-induced vulnerabilities.

MTCC, the country’s largest infrastructure contractor, has spearheaded dozens of reclamation and coastal protection projects across the atolls in recent years. The company’s expertise in dredging, marine construction, and shore protection technologies positions it as a critical partner in the government’s efforts to modernize island infrastructure and secure habitable land for future generations.

The Naivaadhoo agreement adds to MTCC’s growing portfolio of strategic island development projects, aligning with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s broader infrastructure agenda. This initiative is part of a nationwide plan to accelerate land reclamation, improve housing, and strengthen climate resilience in vulnerable communities.

With the signing complete, project mobilization is expected to begin shortly, ensuring that Naivaadhoo benefits from both enhanced coastal security and sustainable growth opportunities in the years ahead.
