MTCC Exposes MDP Government’s Mahaa Jarraafu Corruption Scandal

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 4 hours ago

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has uncovered serious financial misconduct in the 2022 repairs of Mahaa Jarraafu, the nation’s largest dredger, and has formally requested the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate those responsible.

According to findings by the company’s internal audit and endorsed by its Board of Directors, repair services procured from Dubai Dockyard were billed at several times the appropriate cost, in a manner that facilitated corruption. MTCC stressed that such blatant misuse of funds undermines shareholder trust and compromises the nation’s largest infrastructure operator.

“This matter is of utmost seriousness. We have officially requested the Anti-Corruption Commission to take action against those who acted outside the company’s regulations and principles,” the statement said.

The dredger Mahaa Jarraafu is a critical asset for national land reclamation and harbour development projects, making its upkeep vital to the country’s economic future. The revelation that inflated costs were approved during the past administration raises fresh concerns over systemic negligence and corruption in state-linked projects.

By bringing the case forward, MTCC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, promising full cooperation with the ACC to ensure justice is served. This decisive action also reflects President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption, reinforcing his administration’s pledge to uphold the rule of law and protect the Maldivian people’s resources.
