Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has confirmed steady progress on Segment 2 of the Northside Boduthakurufaanu Road Development Project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving accessibility and resilience in Malé.
The update follows a site inspection carried out by MTCC’s Managing Director, Ahmed Saudee, along with senior company officials, who reviewed ongoing construction works under the second phase of the project.
According to MTCC, construction activities under Segment 2 are advancing in line with the planned schedule. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly improve road conditions along the city’s northern corridor by introducing wider, pedestrian-friendly roads, easing traffic congestion and improving safety for both motorists and pedestrians.

A key component of the development includes the installation of a new stormwater drainage system, designed to reduce flooding during periods of heavy rainfall. MTCC said the drainage upgrades will strengthen the area’s resilience to adverse weather, helping to prevent waterlogging and ensuring safer road use year-round.
In parallel with road development works, MTCC also announced operational changes linked to the North Harbour area. Under the new arrangements, services at the harbour will be limited to vessels registered under North Harbour, with registrations now facilitated through a dedicated harbour software portal. The system also allows vessel operators to submit service requests digitally.
Once expansion works are completed, North Harbour’s total capacity is expected to increase to 74 vessels, including 54 berths for cargo and passenger vessels, 20 berths for fishing vessels, and a designated waiting area capable of accommodating up to 25 vessels.
MTCC said the road development project forms part of its broader efforts to modernise urban infrastructure in Malé, improve traffic flow, and deliver safer, more efficient public spaces that support the city’s growing transport and logistics needs.
