National Carrier Expands Wings with Arrival of Fifth ATR Aircraft

By Hussain Shinan Published 7 hours ago

The Maldives’ national airline, Maldivian, has expanded its domestic fleet with the arrival of a fifth ATR aircraft, marking another milestone in the national carrier’s efforts to modernize its fleet and strengthen air connectivity across the island nation.

The newly acquired aircraft was greeted with a traditional water salute upon touchdown, followed by a special ceremony to commemorate the occasion. Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim graced the event as chief guest, alongside senior officials from the aviation and tourism sectors.

Manufactured by Franco-Italian aircraft maker ATR, the aircraft departed from Toulouse, France, and completed its delivery journey with three scheduled stopovers. The delivery flight was operated entirely by a Maldivian crew, further showcasing the airline’s growing operational capabilities.

With this latest acquisition, Maldivian now operates five ATR aircraft—turboprop planes widely praised for their fuel efficiency, operational reliability, and suitability for short-haul flights. These aircraft are considered ideal for navigating the Maldives’ dispersed island geography, offering improved access to remote atolls for both locals and tourists.

Minister Thoriq took to his official X account to highlight the impact of the new aircraft, stating it would “significantly enhance domestic air travel and support the tourism sector.” His sentiments were echoed by Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen, who noted that the government remains committed to strengthening the national airline’s capabilities, including ongoing plans for a second wide-body aircraft.

Maldivian’s fleet expansion comes during a transformative year for the airline. In addition to growing its ATR fleet, the carrier introduced its first wide-body aircraft earlier this year, launched direct routes to three major Chinese cities, and expanded regional services connecting Hanimadhoo to Bangalore, India.

As the Maldives continues to position itself as a premier tourist destination and improve intra-island connectivity, Maldivian’s fleet enhancement is seen as a strategic move to meet growing demand while reinforcing the country’s aviation infrastructure.
