The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has begun deploying additional generator sets across the Maldives as part of early preparations to meet peak electricity demand, particularly ahead of the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.
The utility provider said the initiative is aimed at reinforcing electricity generation capacity nationwide to ensure a stable and uninterrupted power supply during periods when household consumption typically rises.
As part of the programme, STELCO is delivering and installing 12 generator sets to islands across the country. Each of the selected islands will receive one genset, enhancing local-level power generation and improving overall system resilience.
According to STELCO, the newly procured generators come in 600 kilowatt and 1,000 kilowatt capacities, allowing flexibility based on island demand. The company said the installations are part of its annual readiness programme, which is carried out in anticipation of seasonal increases in electricity usage.
In a statement shared on social media, STELCO confirmed that preparations for this year’s peak season are already underway, with all installation and commissioning works expected to be completed before the start of Ramadan.
The company said the initiative is not only intended to increase operational capacity, but also to strengthen public confidence in the reliability of electricity services, particularly during periods of high demand.
Separately, STELCO also announced that a 1,200 kilowatt generator has been commissioned and brought into operation in Vilimalé’, further boosting generation capacity in the Greater Malé’ region. The additional capacity is expected to enhance supply stability and provide greater assurance to households regarding service continuity and quality.
STELCO said the combined measures reflect its ongoing commitment to delivering sustainable and dependable electricity services across the Maldives.
