New Skate Park in Malé Inaugurated by President Muizzu

By Hussain Shinan Published 5 hours ago

President Mohamed Muizzu has officially inaugurated a newly developed skate park arena in the Usfasgandu area of Malé, introducing the country’s first dedicated facility for skating sports.

The opening ceremony, held this afternoon, marked a milestone for the local skating community, with a large number of skaters and enthusiasts attending the event.

Spanning approximately 10,000 square feet, the arena has been designed to cater to multiple disciplines, featuring a specialized area for inline skating alongside a dedicated section for skateboarding.

Development and Construction

The project was initiated with the laying of its foundation stone on October 2 last year, with construction carried out by Rasheed Carpentry and Construction Pvt Ltd (RCC).

According to Abdulla Rafiu, Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, the inline skating ring was completed within three months, while the full facility, including the skateboarding arena, was finalised within five months.

Boost for Local Sports

Speaking at the inauguration, the Minister expressed optimism about the future of skating in the Maldives, noting that the new arena could serve as a foundation for the sport’s development.

He said the facility is expected to provide athletes with a proper environment to train and refine their skills, while also opening opportunities for the Maldives to host international-standard competitions in the future.

Officials say the arena is part of broader efforts to expand recreational infrastructure and create more opportunities for youth engagement in sports.

The launch of the skate park is seen as a significant step in supporting emerging sports in the country, particularly among younger generations, with the facility expected to become a key hub for skating activities in the capital.
