In a strategic move to ensure operational readiness, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) kicked off stakeholder familiarization tours yesterday, inviting airline partners to explore the new Passenger Terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA). The grand opening is scheduled for July 26, marking a significant upgrade to regional aviation infrastructure.

On day two of the initiative, Island Aviation personnel toured the terminal, examining passenger flow patterns and gaining hands‑on familiarity with facilities designed to streamline check‑in, boarding, and baggage handling.

The sleek 78,000 m² terminal will eventually operate up to seven aerobridges, though at launch at least three will be functional—supported by six automated baggage systems, self‑check‑in kiosks, and an expanded CIP lounge network . With a projected annual capacity of 7.5 million passengers and 38 immigration counters, the facility represents a major leap from VIA’s current capabilities.
MACL has scheduled a phased migration of airline operations post‑launch. Low‑infrastructure carriers, including Maldivian, Chongjin Airlines, and XiamenAir, will move into the new terminal between July and August, with the rest following by September—timing the full transition with the onset of the high tourist season.
Pre‑opening sessions earlier this year brought together airport service providers, resorts, transport operators, and Cargo and CIP specialists to fine‑tune operational strategies.
The initiative reflects MACL’s goal of delivering a sophisticated travel environment in time for the Independence Day launch. With major infrastructure delivered by China Harbour Engineering and Saudi Bin Laden Group—backed by international financing—the Maldives is poised to transform VIA into a world‑class aviation gateway.
As the countdown to July 26 begins, airline partners are gaining valuable insight into terminal operations, laying the groundwork for a smooth and efficient passenger experience from day one.
