Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has firmly denied allegations that the government plans to sell or lease Hanimaadhoo International Airport to a foreign party, calling the claims entirely false and baseless.
In a statement posted on social media, Minister Saeed also refuted reports suggesting government officials met with individuals in Singapore to discuss such a deal. He emphasized that these rumors have no foundation and urged the public not to be misled by false information.
Hanimaadhoo International Airport, located in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, is a vital transport hub for the northern Maldives. The airport is currently undergoing a major expansion project funded by a $136 million loan from the Exim Bank of India. Once completed, the upgraded airport will be capable of handling international flights and significantly boost tourism and economic development in the northern region.
Originally opened in 1990, Hanimaadhoo Airport has played a crucial role in improving connectivity for northern atolls and remains a key part of the government’s regional development strategy.
