Ooredoo makes calls to Sri Lanka free as deadly floods worsen

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 9 hours ago

Ooredoo Maldives has launched a 24 hour emergency calling initiative to help customers reach loved ones in Sri Lanka, where relentless heavy rainfall has triggered severe flooding, landslides, and widespread damage across multiple districts. The company announced that all calls made to Sri Lanka will include the first five minutes free for every call session throughout the relief period.

Sri Lanka is currently experiencing one of its most disruptive monsoon events this year. Continuous downpours have led to the overflowing of major rivers, the evacuation of thousands of families, and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. According to updates from Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre, several deaths have been reported due to flooding and landslides, while dozens remain missing. Power outages, blocked roads, and rising water levels continue to hinder rescue operations.

In response, Ooredoo Maldives said its free calling measure aims to support Maldivians and Sri Lankan expatriates living in the Maldives who are trying to confirm the safety and wellbeing of their family members during a rapidly evolving emergency.
