In a significant address marking World Health Day, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu outlined his administration’s unwavering dedication to overhauling the Maldives’ health sector. Speaking at the Barceló Nasandhura Malé Hotel, the President emphasized the critical role of a robust healthcare system in national development and underscored the importance of healthy lifestyles among citizens.
“A healthy population is the cornerstone of a prosperous nation,” President Muizzu stated, highlighting the government’s focus on enhancing healthcare infrastructure and services across the archipelago.
WHO Honours Maldives’ Tobacco Control Efforts
During the ceremony, President Muizzu was presented with the World No Tobacco Day Special Recognition Award by the World Health Organization (WHO). This accolade acknowledges the Maldives’ significant strides in tobacco control, including the implementation of a generational smoking ban for individuals born on or after January 1, 2007, and the prohibition of e-cigarettes and vaping devices.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus commended the Maldives’ leadership, stating, “President Muizzu’s decisive actions serve as a model for other nations aiming to safeguard public health.”
Advancements and Challenges in Healthcare
Reflecting on the past 18 months, President Muizzu detailed progress in healthcare, including policy reforms and infrastructure development. However, he acknowledged challenges such as the shortage of local nurses, urging trained Maldivians to join the healthcare workforce to reduce reliance on foreign professionals.
The President also addressed the importance of efficient resource utilization, noting measures taken to ensure a steady supply of medicines and reduce public fund wastage in the health sector.
Global Health Concerns and Climate Change
Expanding his focus beyond national borders, President Muizzu expressed concern over global health crises, particularly condemning the Israeli actions in Gaza and highlighting the health risks posed by climate change to small island nations like the Maldives.
A Vision for Equitable Healthcare
President Muizzu reiterated his administration’s commitment to building a comprehensive healthcare system that ensures access to medical treatment regardless of geographic location. He emphasized the importance of preventive care and encouraged citizens to adopt healthier lifestyles, including proper nutrition, regular physical activity, and mental well-being.
“Our goal is to create a resilient health system that serves every citizen, laying the foundation for a healthier, more prosperous Maldives,” the President concluded.
