Overcoming past hurdles: President Muizzu commits to accelerated island development

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 28, 2025

During a visit to H.A. Muraidhoo, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced that the government has devised strategies to surmount obstacles hindering development projects. He assured residents that initiatives would now progress within the allocated budget.

Reflecting on the previous year, President Muizzu acknowledged that projects did not advance at his desired pace. He attributed this slowdown to economic challenges and an unfavorable budget that impeded development across various islands. He emphasized that the recent parliamentary elections, which granted the government a majority, have shifted this dynamic, enabling the administration to pursue the populace’s aspirations.

The President clarified that his engagements with citizens are deliberate and involve planned discussions with predefined action plans. He highlighted that by the 2023 election, several projects had been stalled for over a year due to issues like non-payment. However, consultations with relevant ministries and government companies have led to solutions to these challenges.

“God willing, what will be seen next is these works progressing through the opportunities in this budget we have passed,” President Muizzu stated. He affirmed that both stalled projects and new initiatives promised during the election campaign would commence promptly, with significant progress anticipated this year and the next.

In his address, President Muizzu pledged to prioritize and complete the essential development projects for Muraidhoo, underscoring his commitment to the island’s advancement.

This visit marks the beginning of President Muizzu’s tour of H.A. Atoll, during which he plans to engage with local councils, women’s development committees, and key institutional figures to assess and address the unique developmental needs of each island.
