Polling began at 9:00 am across islands and constituencies nationwide and is scheduled to conclude at 4:00 pm. A total of 308 candidates are contesting in the primaries, including 183 aspirants for Local Council seats and 121 candidates for Women’s Development Committees, highlighting the depth of participation within the party.
Earlier, PNC election manager and Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah said the party is fielding candidates in all constituencies and has intentionally conducted polling within the respective islands and electoral districts of each candidate. He noted that the approach strengthens grassroots engagement and ensures broader member involvement in the candidate selection process.
Falah also revealed that party membership has surged in the lead-up to the primaries, with PNC membership now exceeding 70,000. He said the growth signals rising public confidence in the party and added that a strong voter turnout is expected throughout the day.
The Local Council Elections and Women’s Development Committee Elections are scheduled for April 4, during which voters will elect 681 representatives for each category. In total, 1,362 local representatives will be elected nationwide, placing local governance and community leadership at the centre of the country’s democratic process.
