Police Commissioner Announces Accelerated Investigations Into Drug Dealers

By The Standard Published November 30, 2024

The Commissioner of Police, Ali Shujau, has announced a swift acceleration in investigations targeting drug dealers, promising that the public will soon witness visible outcomes of these efforts. The announcement was made during a special segment on PSM News.

Commissioner Shujau provided an update on the police’s ongoing work, emphasizing the significant strides made in combating drug-related crimes over the past year. Under his leadership and with guidance from the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihsan, the Maldives Police Force has been closely following the Strategic Action Plan, which places a strong focus on tackling drug-related offenses and disrupting major gang activities.

In his remarks, the Commissioner outlined the successful efforts of the police force in the past year, including the seizure of substantial quantities of drugs and alcohol. As part of their crackdown, authorities have also shut down over 40 establishments involved in the illegal drug trade. While some of these locations may attempt to reopen, the police remain committed to shutting down any operations linked to the drug trade.

Shujau emphasized that addressing the drug issue requires tackling the key figures behind the illicit networks. He assured the public that efforts are actively underway to apprehend these individuals, and that a comprehensive solution is on the horizon. He also revealed that the police are working alongside other agencies to strengthen the country’s drug treatment systems to ensure a more holistic approach to the crisis.

In addition to dismantling drug trade networks, investigations are intensifying to expose the smuggling operations responsible for flooding the country with illegal substances. With these focused efforts, the Commissioner remains confident that the community will soon see positive results in the battle against drug trafficking and abuse.
