A policewoman has been arrested in connection with a drug operation carried out earlier today in Malé, according to Maldives Police Service. The arrest was made near the Viyafaariverin’ge Mosque in a joint operation conducted by the Police Drug Enforcement Department and Intelligence Unit based on confidential intel.
The suspects have been identified as Aishath Shiyaza, 31, of Dilbahaarge in ADh. Kunburudhoo — confirmed to be an active-duty police officer — and a 26-year-old male from HA. Dhidhdhoo. Upon searching the duo, officers discovered three rubber packets suspected to contain illicit drugs and a pill containing a prohibited substance.
Both individuals were brought before the court for remand. The Criminal Court ordered a five-day detention for Shiyaza and a ten-day remand for the male suspect. Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing under the Drug Enforcement Unit.
This incident highlights deepening concerns over the involvement of law enforcement personnel in criminal activities, particularly drug-related offenses — a growing crisis in the Maldives. According to police statistics, 1,673 drug-related cases were recorded in 2023, and 1,010 cases have already been reported in 2024.
