Power capacity boosted in Gulhi with new STELCO engine

By Hussain Shinan Published February 19, 2026

The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has installed a new 800 kilowatt engine on the island of Gulhi in Kaafu Atoll, increasing the island’s total power generation capacity to 1,904 kW.

The upgrade comes ahead of the island’s peak tourism season, when electricity demand typically rises due to increased visitor numbers and business activity.

Officials said the additional engine is expected to enhance supply reliability and reduce pressure on the island’s existing power infrastructure. Gulhi, known as a growing local tourism destination, is home to 814 residents and currently hosts 15 guesthouses.

During a visit to the island last year, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu underscored the importance of strengthening utility services to support both residents and the expanding tourism sector. He noted that improved electricity capacity would contribute to the island’s long-term development.

The power upgrade follows a major land reclamation project completed in November, which expanded Gulhi’s land area by 10.5 hectares. Authorities have said that infrastructure development would be scaled up in tandem with the island’s physical expansion to accommodate future growth.

With the new engine now operational, STELCO said Gulhi is better positioned to meet rising energy demand while maintaining stable and continuous power supply.
