State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) will carry out critical upgrades to its power generation, distribution, and electrical grid systems across Malé and Hulhumalé on Saturday, 21 June 2025 (Tommorow), resulting in scheduled power interruptions throughout the day. According to STELCO’s notices, the temporary outages are necessary to strengthen infrastructure and improve service reliability.
The shutdowns will occur at designated times in specific areas:
- 06:00–07:00 – Upgrades at the 50 MW Hulhumalé powerhouse may briefly affect residents in various zones of both Malé and Hulhumalé.
- 09:00–12:00 – Power suspension in Malé’s Boduthakurufaanu Magu, Haveeree Hingun, Lainoofaru Hingun, and Meeru Bahuru Hingun sectors.
- 10:00–11:00 – Service interruption in Hulhumalé Phase 1, covering Nirolhu Magu, Dhigga Magu, Hirundhu Magu, and nearby alleys 11, 12, and 13.
- 10:00–12:00 – Concurrent outage for Buruzu Magu and Ameenee Magu areas in Malé.
- 14:00–16:00 – Scheduled power cut in Malé’s Guleynooran Magu, Sikka Goalhi, and Karankaa Magu.
- 16:00–16:30 – Final upgrade of the day in Malé’s Maafannu district to enhance its distribution network.
STELCO extends apologies for any inconvenience and reminds customers that these interruptions are essential to ensure the resilience and safety of the local power grid.
The Greater Malé region—including Hulhumalé—has witnessed consistent increases in power demand driven by urban development and peak-load seasons. These upgrades form part of broader initiatives, such as the Sixth Power Development Project, aimed at bolstering capacity and reducing outage risks in the future.
Infrastructure improvements include modernization at the Hulhumalé powerhouse, capacity enhancements in distribution lines, and reinforcement of electrical grid integrity across Malé. Through targeted outages, STELCO aims to carry out essential transformer work, cabling upgrades, and network interconnections with minimal service disruption.
