“Powering Progress: STELCO and Wärtsilä Celebrate a Decade of Energy Partnership”

By The Standard Published May 22, 2025

In a testament to a decade of fruitful collaboration and shared vision, the State Electric Company (STELCO) and Finnish energy technology leader Wärtsilä came together to mark a milestone event during a recently held Quality, Environmental, Health & Safety (QEHS) session. The session celebrated not just operational excellence, but also a powerful partnership built on mutual goals of sustainability, innovation, and national progress.

The event, which underscored the strategic cooperation between the two organizations, also served as a platform to commemorate two significant achievements: STELCO’s 75 years of service to the Maldivian people, and Wärtsilä’s 10-year partnership powering the nation’s energy sector.

In a symbolic exchange of appreciation, Wärtsilä presented STELCO with a commemorative token, honoring its decades-long role as the country’s backbone of energy supply. In return, STELCO acknowledged Wärtsilä’s contributions over the past ten years—years marked by technological integration, reliability, and a shared commitment to a more sustainable energy future.

Powering the Nation with Trust and Technology

Today, 14 Wärtsilä engines operate across STELCO facilities, delivering a combined 86 megawatts of power. These engines are a crucial part of the Maldives’ energy infrastructure, playing a vital role in ensuring uninterrupted electricity and driving national development.

The partnership has not only enhanced operational capacity but also reflected STELCO’s broader commitment to international standards in quality, environmental stewardship, health, and safety. The QEHS session emphasized this ethos, bringing together technical teams and leadership to align future strategies and reinforce best practices.

A Future-Ready Alliance

Reflecting on the collaboration, STELCO leadership expressed confidence in the continuing journey with Wärtsilä, noting that the partnership is evolving in pace with the country’s energy needs and climate-conscious goals.

“We’re not just celebrating years—we’re celebrating progress,” a STELCO official remarked. “From clean power generation to efficient operations, this partnership is helping us lay the foundation for a more resilient and sustainable Maldives.”

As both companies look ahead, the session reaffirmed their joint commitment to pushing boundaries in energy innovation, ensuring that the lights of the Maldives continue to shine brighter—safely, efficiently, and sustainably.
