President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday night provided an update on the government’s recently announced crackdown on illegal businesses operated by foreign nationals under Maldivian ownership fronts, while addressing residents of Hulhumalé Phase 1.
Speaking during the community meeting, the President said the issue of foreigners engaging in irregular work, particularly through unregistered businesses in Malé, has become a widespread and visible concern. He noted that although successive governments had repeatedly stated that the matter was being treated with seriousness, enforcement rarely translated into sustained action despite clear legal provisions.

Muizzu said intensified implementation began after public consultations revealed strong concern among citizens, prompting his administration to strengthen enforcement efforts. While the government has been addressing the issue in a structured manner over the past two years, he said tangible results have been delivered in recent weeks following the formal announcement of the crackdown.
“In just three weeks, 57 businesses operating irregularly under foreign control have been shut down, and the third week has not even concluded yet,” the President told residents, highlighting the pace of action.
He added that the closures form part of a broader response to public feedback, with several other initiatives currently underway to tackle wider societal challenges. According to Muizzu, all government actions are being guided by public sentiment and aimed at restoring legality, fairness, and accountability.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to proactively resolving long-standing issues, stating that efforts are continuing in line with public expectations and the responsibilities entrusted to the government.
