President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has confirmed that the 300 new housing units planned for Vilimale will be allocated solely to the residents of the island, reaffirming his commitment to delivering the promises made during his presidential campaign. Speaking at a community meeting, he stated that solving Vilimale’s housing challenges remains a top priority of his administration.
The President announced that construction of the 300 unit project will begin within this year. He noted that financing has already been secured, the project will soon be contracted, and the apartments will consist of three bedroom units dedicated exclusively to Vilimale residents.

These homes form part of the broader plan to build 3000 housing units across the Malé region. Under this initiative, 300 units will be developed in Vilimale and 2700 units in Hulhumale Phase 1 and Phase 2. The programme is being implemented under the National Housing Affordability and Accessibility Project approved by the Cabinet last month, introducing a lease to own model supported by financial institutions to expand home ownership opportunities.
President Muizzu also announced major progress on health services in Vilimale. He confirmed that arrangements have been made to temporarily relocate the current hospital’s services to the former Kudakudhinge Hiya building. This relocation will allow the government to proceed with the redevelopment of the Vilimale Hospital, a key pledge he highlighted during his presidential campaign.
He added that preparations are complete and that the redevelopment of the hospital is ready to begin.
The President further assured that Vilimale’s roads will be upgraded under Chinese grant aid as part of the ongoing effort to bring Malé City’s road network up to modern standards. He noted that the water and sewerage systems in Vilimale will also be improved in tandem with the new road construction.
The announcements underscore Vilimale’s central role in the government’s housing and infrastructure agenda, strengthening the administration’s wider effort to enhance public services and improve living conditions in the capital region.
