President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has unveiled a landmark policy that will place mental health at the forefront of national healthcare, confirming that beginning January all treatment expenses related to mental illnesses will be fully covered under the Aasandha insurance scheme. The announcement was delivered during the Hafthaa 104 ceremony, which also marked two years of the current administration.

The decision introduces a historic shift in national health priorities, ensuring citizens can access essential psychological and psychiatric care without bearing any out of pocket costs. With mental health challenges rising globally and regionally, the policy is expected to remove long standing financial barriers that have prevented many Maldivians from seeking timely treatment.
In his address, President Muizzu said it was not reasonable for Aasandha to cover only a portion of treatment for individuals with mental health conditions. He emphasized that mental illnesses must be treated on par with physical illnesses within the national system. The President noted that universal coverage reflects the government’s pledge to guarantee equitable healthcare for every citizen.
By eliminating partial payment requirements, the administration aims to ensure that no Maldivian is discouraged from pursuing treatment due to financial limitations. The policy aligns with the broader national commitment to strengthen social protection, expand access to essential services, and modernize the Maldives health sector in line with global best practices.
Further details on implementation phases, participating facilities, and expanded service guidelines are expected to be released by the Aasandha in the coming weeks.
