In a visit that symbolized spiritual devotion and diplomatic momentum, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed have concluded their official Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia at the special invitation of the Kingdom’s leadership.
President Muizzu and his delegation, which included key ministers, departed for Saudi Arabia on May 31. The trip, fully sponsored by the Saudi government, marked a significant moment in strengthening Maldives–Saudi ties, both religiously and diplomatically. The couple was officially seen off at Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport by Prince Saud bin Abdullah bin al-Jalawi al-Saud, Governor of Jeddah Province, underscoring the importance of the visit.
While in the Kingdom, President Muizzu took time to meet with Maldivian pilgrims performing Hajj. He personally inquired about their well-being, listened to their concerns, and reassured them of the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage experience.
A key highlight of the visit was President Muizzu’s attendance at the high-level Hajj reception hosted by Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister, His Royal Highness Mohammed bin Salman, on behalf of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. In a notable diplomatic gesture, President Muizzu was seated beside the Crown Prince—signaling the close and growing rapport between the two nations.
In a separate meeting, President Muizzu and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman discussed avenues to further deepen bilateral ties. President Muizzu expressed heartfelt gratitude to King Salman, the Crown Prince, and the Saudi government for their generosity, warm hospitality, and the impeccable arrangements provided for both Maldivian and global pilgrims. The discussions also touched upon expanding cooperation in areas of mutual benefit, with a shared vision for enhanced strategic partnership.
Additionally, President Muizzu held a courtesy meeting with Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dr. Tawfig F. Al-Rabiah. The President reiterated his appreciation for the Kingdom’s exceptional efforts in managing Hajj logistics, particularly the thoughtful consideration extended to Maldivian pilgrims.
This year’s royal invitation and high-level engagements signal a new chapter in Maldives–Saudi Arabia relations—built on shared faith, respect, and strategic cooperation. As President Muizzu returns home, the message is clear: under his leadership, the Maldives is forging meaningful alliances while upholding its spiritual and national values.
