President Muizzu Confirms Historic Action as 83 Brothels Disguised as Salons Are Closed

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 6 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu tonight revealed concrete results from the government’s crackdown on illegal massage parlours, announcing that 83 establishments have been shut down since enforcement operations began earlier this month.

Speaking at a meeting with residents of Hulhumalé Phase 1, President Muizzu said the action follows the crackdown announced last week in response to widespread public concern raised during ward level consultations across all constituencies of Malé.

He described the proliferation of establishments operating under the guise of salons or massage parlours as a serious social problem that violates national laws, regulations, and religious principles, noting that citizens have repeatedly called for stronger and lasting enforcement.

Following the announcement of the crackdown, a special task force comprising the Ministry of Economic Development, Maldives Immigration, and the Maldives Police Service was activated with renewed focus, additional resources, and a clear mandate to act decisively.

According to the President, the task force commenced operations on December 9 and, by December 21, had permanently shut down 83 illegal massage parlours, many of which were operated by foreign nationals.

President Muizzu said this marks the most extensive enforcement action of its kind in the country’s history, pointing out that past operations often resulted in warnings or temporary closures rather than permanent shutdowns.

He confirmed that arrests are now taking place and that deportation processes have begun for foreign nationals currently in custody, signaling a shift from symbolic enforcement to firm legal consequences.

“Our goal is to build a society that is pure in every sense of the word, in line with the values and expectations of our people,” the President said, adding that citizen feedback will continue to shape government action.

The update underscores the administration’s message that public concerns raised during consultation meetings are not merely being heard, but are being translated into swift and measurable action on the ground.
