President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the government holds no specific stance regarding the upcoming referendum in the Addu City islands of Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo.
In a post shared on his official social media account, President Muizzu emphasized that the administration does not favor any particular outcome and will fully respect the will of the people.
“The government does not have a specific stance on the referendum being held in Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo of Addu City. The government does not prefer any particular outcome. The government will implement whatever decision the majority of the citizens make” the President wrote.
The public vote—scheduled for later this month under the Public Referendum Act—will determine whether separate councils should be established for the three islands or if Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo should be governed jointly under a single local council.
President Muizzu’s statement underscores his administration’s commitment to decentralization and public participation in governance, ensuring that local decisions are made democratically by the people directly affected.
