In a major step to support Maldivians seeking treatment overseas, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced enhanced dollar access through local banks—part of his administration’s ongoing efforts to prioritize healthcare access and economic relief for citizens. The new measures will take effect from August 1, 2025, and are expected to provide timely financial support to those facing medical emergencies abroad.
Under the newly announced arrangements:
- Aasandha patients will continue to receive up to USD 2,000 through Bank of Maldives for medical treatment abroad.
- NSPA patients will also be eligible to obtain up to USD 2,000 through Bank of Maldives, starting August 1.
- Self-paying individuals traveling overseas for medical treatment will be allowed to access up to USD 1,000 through Bank of Maldives.
President Muizzu confirmed that these measures have been officially conveyed to the relevant institutions for immediate implementation. The policy shift reflects his government’s firm resolve to remove foreign exchange obstacles for patients and ensure that access to life-saving treatment is not hindered by currency limitations.
This latest initiative is a clear testament to the administration’s people-centric vision—where compassion, efficiency, and action go hand-in-hand to deliver meaningful change to every Maldivian household.
