President Muizzu departs for high-level talks in Germany

By Ahmed Ashraf Published February 9, 2026

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has departed for the Federal Republic of Germany on an official visit, signalling a new phase of strategic engagement between the Maldives and one of Europe’s leading economies as the two nations commemorate six decades of diplomatic relations.

The visit, scheduled from 9 to 13 February 2026, is being undertaken at the invitation of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. It underscores the growing political, economic, and environmental cooperation between the Maldives and Germany at a time of heightened global focus on climate resilience and sustainable development.

During the official programme, President Muizzu is set to hold high-level talks with President Steinmeier and senior members of the German government. Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations, expanding economic cooperation, and advancing shared priorities on climate action and ocean governance.

A key highlight of the visit will be a Maldives–Germany business forum bringing together public and private sector representatives from both countries. The forum aims to unlock new investment opportunities, deepen trade relations, and position the Maldives as a stable and forward-looking partner for German businesses.

President Muizzu will also engage with leading academic and policy institutions in Berlin. He is scheduled to address Humboldt University on the Maldives’ experience in climate change adaptation, sharing insights from the frontline of global climate vulnerability. At the German Council on Foreign Relations, the President will outline the Maldives’ strategic perspective on the role of the ocean in shaping foreign policy, maritime security, and sustainable development.

The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Germany, established on 5 July 1966. Officials note that President Muizzu’s engagements reflect the administration’s commitment to elevating long-standing partnerships into future-oriented alliances grounded in economic cooperation, environmental leadership, and global dialogue.
