President Muizzu Expresses Solidarity with India After Air India Tragedy

By Ahmed Ashraf Published June 12, 2025

In a poignant X post today, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu voiced the Maldives’ heartfelt condolences following the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI 171 near Ahmedabad. “I express profound sadness at the tragic crash of @airindia flight AI 171 near Ahmedabad. At this difficult time, the government and people of #Maldives stand in solidarity with the people and the Government of India,” he wrote—marking a swift and compassionate response from our leadership.

The statement resonates beyond simple words. It reaffirms our commitment to regional unity at a moment when compassion matters most. The crash, involving 242 passengers and crew, has mobilised a large-scale rescue and investigation effort in India. Against this backdrop, President Muizzu’s expression of solidarity carries both emotional weight and diplomatic significance .

This gesture arrives amid a phase of renewed cooperation with India. In recent weeks, New Delhi extended financial aid to the Maldives through a $50 million T‑bill rollover—a gesture our Foreign Minister called “a timely assistance reflecting the close bonds of friendship between Maldives & India” . These developments follow several high‑level visits and our shared commitment to major infrastructure projects like the Greater Malé Connectivity Project and defence cooperation.

President Muizzu’s message reinforces this rhythm of collaboration. It tells Maldives audiences: despite global uncertainty, our leadership emphasises solidarity, not isolation. In our region, mutual support is both moral and strategic.

For Maldivians tuning in today, the message is clear: we stand with our neighbours in crisis, and in doing so, reinforce our role as a caring, responsible partner. As investigations in India unfold, our nation’s gesture reflects broader ambitions—a diplomatic posture rooted in empathy, mutual respect, and a shared future.
