President Muizzu Hails Israeli Passport Ban as Historic Move in Solidarity with Palestine

By Ahmed Ashraf Published May 3, 2025

In a resolute affirmation of the Maldives’ unwavering support for Palestine, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has applauded the government’s landmark decision to bar entry to Israeli passport holders. Addressing the media at a press conference held at the President’s Office, President Muizzu described the move as one of the most principled and defining actions in the nation’s recent history.

The President emphasized that this bold step reflects the Maldives’ foreign policy vision — one rooted in protecting national sovereignty, defending justice, and standing in solidarity with oppressed peoples around the world. “This is not just a policy decision,” Muizzu declared. “It is a moral stance that resonates with the conscience of our nation.”

The entry ban on Israeli passport holders officially took effect on 15 April, following the ratification of the third amendment to the Maldives Immigration Act. The amendment was swiftly passed by Parliament and endorsed by the President, underscoring the administration’s commitment to acting decisively on matters of international injustice.

Government officials have stressed that the ban is a direct response to the grave human rights violations and acts of genocide committed by the Israeli regime against the Palestinian people. By legally prohibiting Israeli passport holders from entering the country, the Maldives has etched its opposition into law — standing firmly with the global call to end Israeli aggression.

President Muizzu also highlighted that this measure is not an isolated act, but part of a broader diplomatic campaign. The Maldives is actively advocating on international platforms for the recognition of a sovereign Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Furthermore, the administration continues to call for Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations.

“This government will never remain silent in the face of injustice,” President Muizzu affirmed. “Our voice will always echo in defense of the Palestinian cause — in our laws, in our diplomacy, and in our hearts.”

The announcement comes as global outrage intensifies over Israel’s military actions, with growing international momentum behind calls for accountability. The Maldives, through this decisive step, has reinforced its place among nations that choose principle over political expediency.
