President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, His Excellency Anura Kumara Disanayaka, arrived in the Maldives today on a state visit, marking a significant milestone in the long-standing diplomatic ties between the two Indian Ocean neighbours.

President Disanayaka was warmly received at Velana International Airport by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, signifying the strong spirit of friendship and cooperation shared between the two countries. A formal welcoming ceremony in honour of the visiting Head of State is scheduled to take place later today.
This visit, President Disanayaka’s first official trip to the Maldives since assuming office in September 2024, comes at a historic juncture as both nations commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, which began on 26 July 1965.
During the state visit, President Disanayaka will hold bilateral talks with President Dr Muizzu, with the agenda focused on enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including trade, tourism, regional security, and education. The two leaders are also expected to deliver joint press statements highlighting the outcomes of their discussions and outlining future avenues of collaboration.
The Maldives and Sri Lanka share a rich history of diplomatic engagement, underpinned by mutual respect, cultural ties, and shared aspirations for peace and prosperity in the region. This high-level exchange reaffirms the commitment of both governments to elevate their partnership to new heights.
