President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu today presided over the official ceremony marking the commencement of the V. Fulidhoo Harbor Development Project, a transformative initiative that promises to enhance maritime infrastructure and uplift the economic prospects of this renowned island community.
The practical work of the project was officially inaugurated by Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdullah Muttalib, in the presence of Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, senior government officials, Fulidhoo Council members, and representatives of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
Home to over 520 residents and famed as a tourist destination, Fulidhoo has long faced challenges due to its limited harbor capacity, particularly in loading and unloading goods and ensuring smooth passenger movement. The new development will resolve these difficulties, providing residents and businesses with a modern, spacious harbor designed to support both community life and growing economic activity.
The project, entrusted to MTCC, involves extensive dredging works of 79,933 cubic meters, the construction of a 300-meter quay wall, 439 meters of revetment, 174 meters of geotube revetment, and a 77-meter breakwater. Additional features include a 25-meter groyne, 1,150 square meters of pavement, a 6-meter by 40-meter concrete bridge, and modern harbor lighting.
Valued at MVR 463.46 million and scheduled for completion within 465 days, the project reflects the government’s strong commitment to modernizing island infrastructure and ensuring equitable development across the nation.
Since its establishment in 1980, MTCC has been the backbone of Maldives’ infrastructure development, spearheading landmark projects across the atolls for the past 44 years. The company continues to play a vital role in building harbors, airports, roads, and other critical facilities that shape the nation’s social and economic landscape.
For the people of Fulidhoo, the new harbor project signifies more than just infrastructure—it is a gateway to improved trade, better connectivity, and long-term prosperity.
