President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described Moosa Ali Jaleel, the People’s National Congress (PNC) candidate for Mayor of Malé, as a patriotic individual in whom the nation can take pride, during remarks delivered at a party campaign event yesterday.
Speaking to supporters, the President said Jaleel had agreed to contest the mayoral election following a direct request from him, adding that he had full confidence in Jaleel’s integrity and work ethic. He said the decision was based on his belief that Jaleel would work diligently to support efforts to deliver on commitments made to the residents of Malé.
“He bears no stains on his reputation. He is an energetic, patriotic person that the nation has pride in,” the President said, thanking Jaleel for accepting the responsibility to contest the election.
The President reiterated these remarks while speaking at the PNC mayoral candidates’ office, where he emphasised the importance of close coordination between the Malé City Council and the central government. He said effective cooperation would be essential to ensure that development projects and public pledges are implemented without delay.
President Muizzu also announced that he would take part in door-to-door campaigning in Malé City ahead of the April 4 Local Council Elections. Reflecting on his own time as Mayor of Malé, he said maintaining regular contact with residents had allowed him to better understand and address community concerns, adding that he remains familiar with the challenges faced by the capital.
Addressing development priorities, the President said housing remains the most pressing issue for Malé residents. He noted that housing units and land plots approved under the previous administration have now been handed over, while large-scale reclamation projects are progressing. According to the President, Hulhumalé Phase III reclamation is nearing completion, while Rasmalé is expected to be completed by April, with land recipient lists to be published around the same time. He added that land allocation processes are also ongoing for Gulhifalhu and Giraavaru Falhu.
The President said the government would be better positioned to deliver its development agenda if PNC candidates are elected to local councils, cautioning voters against electing individuals who may obstruct progress.
Concluding his remarks, President Muizzu appealed to residents of Malé to support candidates who would work constructively with the government, stressing the importance of cooperation and unity in advancing the city’s development.
