President Muizzu: “Listening to citizens firsthand is how we build a stronger Maldives”

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 17 hours ago

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to people-centric governance during his ongoing visit to Shaviyani Atoll, underscoring that true leadership means meeting citizens face-to-face to resolve their challenges without delay.

Speaking to residents of Noomaraa on Sunday, President Muizzu said he could have chosen to remain in Malé, but that is not his way of governing. “When we come close to the people, we understand things better. They can share their concerns directly with me and my team. Some issues we can solve immediately, and for others, we plan sustainable solutions” he stated.

The President noted that this approach fulfills his campaign pledge to visit every inhabited island twice during his term. He has already visited several islands twice, reflecting his dedication to direct public engagement.

Development Commitments for Noomaraa

During his visit, President Muizzu announced several major projects for Noomaraa. The island’s harbor will be expanded to include a boat hauling area and a swimming zone, as requested by residents. The remaining work on the island’s water and sewerage system has already been assigned to the Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC).

In addition, the government will include funding for a football ground, a volleyball court, and a multi-purpose school hall in next year’s state budget. President Muizzu also pledged to develop the island’s roads, though he emphasized that priority would be given to the harbor and community facilities first.

Improving Health Services

Highlighting his administration’s focus on the health sector, President Muizzu said the government had prioritized staffing health facilities and expanding access to diagnostic services across all islands. He announced that Noomaraa’s health center, which already has a laboratory building, will soon receive the necessary staff and equipment to eliminate the need for residents to travel to nearby islands for basic medical tests.

He reaffirmed his nationwide policy to establish laboratories and waste management systems in every inhabited island within the next two years — a major step toward ensuring equitable healthcare for all citizens.

Infrastructure and Connectivity

President Muizzu also revealed that the relocation of Noomaraa’s powerhouse will be completed before Ramadan, with full support from Fenaka Corporation. Addressing transport concerns, he stated that the government is working with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to review and shorten the RTL ferry route to improve accessibility for the island’s residents.

Through these efforts, President Muizzu continues to demonstrate his governing philosophy — one rooted in action, connection, and direct accountability to the people. His island visits reflect a broader vision to bridge development gaps and build a more self-sufficient, resilient Maldives.
