President Muizzu: Maldives will forever stand as a strong Islamic nation

By Ahmed Ashraf Published September 23, 2025

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his government’s unwavering commitment to preserving the Maldives as a proud Islamic nation, as the country approaches the historic 900th anniversary of embracing Islam.

In a statement delivered to the nation, President Muizzu praised Allah, the Almighty, for blessing the Maldivian people with the light of Islam and recalled the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) teachings that continue to guide the nation. He emphasized that the single most transformative moment in Maldivian history was the collective acceptance of Islam, nearly nine centuries ago — a faith that has since united Maldivians as one people, steadfastly resisting any attempt to introduce foreign religions to the country.

The President paid tribute to Abul Barakat Yusuf Al-Barbari, the scholar who first brought Islam to the Maldives, and honored generations of kings, scholars, and leaders who protected the faith. He prayed for Allah’s mercy upon them and pledged that his government would continue their legacy by nurturing future generations with strong Islamic values and moral integrity.

Highlighting the Maldives’ reputation for peace, hospitality, and good conduct — qualities often noted by historians — President Muizzu stressed that Islam is not only a religion but also a foundation for national identity and global respect. “Our beauty as a nation shines brighter because of the Islamic morals embedded in our people,” he said.

Looking ahead, President Muizzu announced that the government will celebrate the 900th anniversary of the nation’s conversion to Islam with nationwide activities. These commemorations, he said, will strengthen the Maldivian people’s Islamic spirit, revive national pride, and reinforce unity across the country.

“The Maldives will always remain a strong Islamic state, standing at the forefront of defending the Ummah” President Muizzu declared, expressing confidence that the coming celebrations would mark one of the most significant milestones in the nation’s history.

He concluded with a heartfelt prayer: that Allah protect the Maldives, strengthen its people in faith, and raise the nation’s dignity as a beacon of Islam.
