President Muizzu Marks World Day of Social Justice with Vision for a Just Future

By Hussain Shinan Published February 20, 2025

On the occasion of World Day of Social Justice, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has shared a message emphasizing the importance of fairness, equality, and justice for all. The President called on the global community to reaffirm its commitment to creating a world where social equity and environmental sustainability are in harmony.

The theme for this year’s observance, “Strengthening a Just Transition for a Sustainable Future,” is particularly relevant to the Maldives, a small island developing state that faces unique challenges in balancing economic development with environmental sustainability. President Muizzu highlighted how the theme resonates with the nation’s priorities, noting the urgency of addressing both the environmental and economic needs of the Maldives.

In his message, President Muizzu reflected on the Maldives’ recent membership in the Global Coalition for Social Justice, which the country joined in July 2024. By becoming a part of this international effort, the Maldives has committed to advancing social justice through collective action, strengthening societal resilience, and fostering dialogue for shared prosperity.

“As a nation, we are making bold strides to transform our economy and future development,” the President said. “We have set ambitious goals to improve the lives of all those who call our geographically dispersed islands home. Moreover, our commitment to sustainability is evident in the development of Ras Malé, which will serve as a model for eco-cities, addressing both critical housing needs and setting new standards for environmental sustainability.”

The President also discussed the government’s goal of achieving a low-carbon economy. With plans to increase the country’s renewable energy sources to 33% by 2028 and a clear roadmap to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, the government is taking significant steps towards enhancing energy security while minimizing environmental impact. Policies that incorporate gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) are central to this transformation, ensuring that the benefits of this transition reach all members of society.

President Muizzu stressed the importance of creating a robust social protection system to safeguard communities from economic risks and environmental challenges. This, he explained, would be achieved through community-focused, participatory governance, which integrates modern technologies with traditional knowledge to develop decentralized solutions. The transformation will not only focus on urban centers like Ras Malé but will also look at digital transformation, ensuring a smart, safe, and sustainable future for all citizens.

In conclusion, President Muizzu emphasized that the realization of a just and sustainable future requires collective action. “We must draw lessons from our past and work together to build a brighter future for all,” he stated.

In addition to his official message, the President also shared his thoughts on his official ‘X’ account, further promoting the values of social justice and sustainability on the global stage.
