President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu today assured the Maldives Journalist Association (MJA) that his administration will remain steadfast in upholding and advancing press freedom, underscoring that the government is “100% media-pro”.
The meeting, held at the President’s Office upon the request of the MJA, focused on the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill currently under review at the People’s Majlis. Journalists presented a range of concerns, which the President listened to attentively during a session lasting over an hour.
Government Stands for Media Independence
President Muizzu stressed that his government does not seek to control the media or interfere in regulatory matters, noting that the administration has no interest in appointing members to regulatory bodies. Instead, he pledged to propose amendments to ensure that the bill fully addresses the issues raised by media professionals.
He emphasized that creating a favorable environment for journalists and media outlets remains a cornerstone of his government’s democratic agenda. “We will always listen to your concerns and stand with you to protect freedom of expression” the President said, highlighting ongoing efforts to introduce measures that strengthen media operations nationwide.
Assurance of Cooperation and Dialogue
In a clear message of reassurance, President Muizzu reaffirmed that the government will continue to cooperate with all stakeholders to safeguard the independence and vibrancy of Maldivian media. The dialogue reflects the administration’s open-door policy, ensuring that journalists have direct access to decision-makers on issues affecting press freedom.
