President Muizzu moves to scrap perks for ex-presidents and MPs, announces pension reforms

By Ahmed Ashraf Published September 10, 2025

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government will submit amendments to the People’s Majlis to eliminate certain benefits currently granted to former Presidents and former Members of Parliament. The move comes as public pressure mounts to curb state spending on lifetime perks for political officeholders.

In a statement shared on X, the President confirmed that draft legislative changes are being prepared to scale back these privileges, aligning policy with growing calls for fairness and accountability.

At the same time, the government is spearheading a wider effort to standardize pension benefits for state employees. The planned reforms will ensure that once a retired civil servant resumes work in another state position, their pension will be suspended for the duration of that employment, closing long-criticized loopholes.

President Muizzu emphasized that these steps form part of his administration’s broader agenda to prioritize the people’s demands and safeguard public finances.

With the hashtag #AbolishExMPBenefits continuing to gain traction on social media, the government’s announcement marks a decisive step toward reining in political privilege and promoting a culture of accountability across the state sector.
