President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated new self-service banking ATMs on the islands of Goidhoo and Fehendhoo in Baa Atoll, marking the latest phase in the Bank of Maldives’ (BML) nationwide ATM expansion drive.
The installations are part of the bank’s ongoing efforts to improve financial access in remote communities. Earlier this week, similar ATMs were introduced on Kamadhoo, Kudarikilu, and Kendhoo, with additional Baa Atoll islands still scheduled to receive services under the programme.
BML’s CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef described the expansion as a key step toward financial inclusion, noting that while coverage in Baa Atoll has grown significantly, the bank’s goal is to ensure ATM access on every inhabited island in the Maldives by the end of this year.
The new ATMs will allow residents to carry out deposits, withdrawals, transfers, and bill payments 24/7, reducing the need for costly and time-consuming travel to other islands. Goidhoo has around 583 residents, while Fehendhoo has approximately 198, both located more than 90 kilometres from Malé.
This rollout is part of BML’s broader “Mulhi Raajje ah BML ATM” initiative, which has already seen ATMs installed in 42 new locations across the Maldives this year. The bank currently operates 40 branches, 134 self-service banking centres, and 189 ATMs, alongside a robust agent network and advanced digital banking platforms.
