President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged a landmark infrastructure drive to equip newly reclaimed areas with essential services, announcing that the initiative will be embedded in next year’s national budget. Speaking to residents of Eydhafushi during his tour of Baa Atoll, the President declared that his administration will deliver structured, nationwide solutions to long-standing gaps in water, sanitation, and electricity networks.

President Muizzu said a dedicated policy framework will be introduced to ensure reclaimed lands receive timely and comprehensive infrastructure development, ending years of fragmented efforts. “This is about consistency, structure, and delivering what people have waited for” he affirmed.
Underscoring progress on his election pledges, the President revealed that work on 1,000 housing units will begin this year, with all units completed before the end of his term. Harbour development will be finalised within six months, while a state-of-the-art indoor multi-sport complex will also break ground this year. Other planned upgrades include expanding Eydhafushi’s water and power networks, introducing a US dollar ATM service, and allocating additional housing plots to meet growing demand.
Eydhafushi is also among the islands chosen for the development of convention centres, with construction scheduled to begin next year. Earlier in the day, Dr Muizzu inaugurated the island’s new RTL ferry service and witnessed the signing of agreements to establish a Maldives National University campus and construct a new building for Baa Atoll Hospital.
The President stressed that these projects reflect his administration’s broader vision, outlined in the Presidential Address, to advance decentralisation and strengthen community empowerment. He urged local councils to put aside political divisions and focus on delivering government policies for the public good.
“Development must come before politics” President Muizzu said, reiterating his call for sincerity and cooperation in building a stronger, more connected Maldives.
