President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu today ratified the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill, officially enacting it as Act No. 16/2025—a milestone in the nation’s journey to strengthen press freedom and ensure responsible journalism.
Passed during the Sixth Special Session of the People’s Majlis on 16 September 2025, this decisive legislation underscores the Administration’s unwavering commitment to building a free, fair, and transparent media landscape while safeguarding constitutional rights.
Safeguarding Press Freedom and Public Trust
The Act introduces robust mechanisms to prevent the spread of false information, reinforcing public confidence in the media and ensuring that press freedom is exercised responsibly. It establishes a framework that protects the rights of journalists, while also emphasizing professional accountability in line with international democratic standards.
Modernizing Media Governance
In a major reform, the Act streamlines media registration procedures, making it easier for outlets to operate while aligning with global best practices. A new regulatory authority—the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission—will be created to oversee both print and broadcast media. This body will ensure transparent regulation, support professional growth, and advance media independence.
The legislation also dissolves outdated structures such as the Maldives Media Council and reconstitutes the Maldives Broadcasting Commission, replacing them with a unified, forward-looking institution designed to better serve the evolving media environment.
Interim Oversight for Smooth Transition
Until the new Commission is formally established, its powers will be exercised by an interim five-member committee appointed by the Civil Service Commission, ensuring continuity and stability during the transition.
A Defining Step in Media Reform
By ratifying this Act, President Muizzu has reaffirmed his Administration’s dedication to nurturing a responsible and independent press—an essential pillar of democracy. The law represents not just regulatory reform but a decisive step toward empowering Maldivian media to thrive in a modern, transparent, and accountable environment.
