President Muizzu Sends a Clear Message: No Safe Haven for Nepo Privilege

By Ahmed Ashraf Published April 24, 2025

In the wake of a tragic incident involving a 21-year-old woman who sustained severe injuries after falling from a building in Henveiru, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to impartial justice.

Addressing the nation via social media, President Muizzu emphasized that the enforcement of the Constitution and laws will be free from discrimination, irrespective of an individual’s lineage, position, wealth, or political affiliation. “There will be no discrimination in this matter based on friendship, family relations, political ideology, or any other factor,” he stated.

The incident, which occurred on April 18, has garnered significant public attention due to the involvement of individuals connected to high-ranking officials. Prior to her fall, the young woman attended a gathering at the residence of Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen. Minister Ameen has acknowledged that two of his nephews were present at the gathering but denied any knowledge of the event itself. He also refuted allegations of interfering with the police investigation.

In response to the incident, the President’s Office has taken decisive actions. Izdiyaan Mohamed Maumoon, the Under Secretary for Communication Strategy and one of the minister’s nephews present at the gathering, has been dismissed from his position. Additionally, Dhaud Ahmed, the Under Secretary for Digital Strategy and brother of Raudh Ahmed Zilal—the last person known to have been with the victim—has been suspended without pay.

The Maldives Police Service has intensified its investigation, applying for a court warrant to arrest Raudh Ahmed Zilal due to his lack of cooperation. They have also sought warrants to search properties linked to the case and to conduct drug tests on all individuals involved.

President Muizzu’s firm stance on impartial justice aims to restore public confidence and ensure that all citizens are treated equally under the law, regardless of their connections or status.
