President Muizzu to Allocate MVR 1 Billion in 2026 Budget to End Housing Crisis

By Ahmed Ashraf Published July 22, 2025

In a decisive move to tackle one of the nation’s most pressing issues, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced a landmark MVR 1 billion housing project set to be launched next year, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to delivering affordable housing solutions for all Maldivians.

Speaking at a rally in Manadhoo during his visit to 13 islands in Noonu Atoll, President Muizzu declared that resolving the housing crisis remains one of the government’s top national priorities. He emphasized that while substantial investments have already been made this year, the scale of the problem demands continued, phased efforts across multiple years.

The President reaffirmed his campaign pledge to ensure dignified housing for every citizen, acknowledging that while it is not possible to initiate all projects in a single year, significant groundwork has already been laid. Notably, Manadhoo has become an early beneficiary, with 50 housing units currently in progress. An additional 50 units are slated for construction next year, with similar initiatives to be rolled out nationwide in phases.

“This is a government that delivers,” President Muizzu asserted, highlighting the administration’s bold new housing loan scheme ‘Hiyavahi’, which offers long-term relief for aspiring homeowners. Under the program, loans are extended at an exceptionally low 5 percent interest rate, with a generous 25-year repayment period—making homeownership more accessible than ever before.

President Muizzu’s proactive approach signals a new era in national development, turning promises into action and laying the foundation for a future where every Maldivian can enjoy the security of a permanent home.
