President Muizzu to hold high-level talks in Germany during landmark visit

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 8 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is set to undertake an official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany from 9 to 13 February 2026, marking a major diplomatic milestone as the Maldives deepens engagement with one of Europe’s most influential nations.

The visit, undertaken at the invitation of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, will feature high-level talks with Germany’s top leadership, focusing on political cooperation, climate action, economic partnerships, and shared global priorities. The discussions are expected to further consolidate the longstanding and trusted relationship between the Maldives and Germany.

A key highlight of the visit will be President Muizzu’s keynote address at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where he will present the Maldives’ globally respected experience in climate change adaptation. He is also scheduled to deliver a keynote speech at the German Council on Foreign Relations, outlining the Maldives’ leadership vision on ocean governance and the growing role of oceans in modern foreign policy.

The President will be accompanied by a high-level delegation of Cabinet Ministers and leading business representatives, underlining the administration’s focus on economic diplomacy. A Maldives–Germany business forum will be held during the visit, creating a platform for investors and enterprises from both countries to explore concrete collaboration opportunities across tourism, renewable energy, infrastructure, and sustainable development.

This landmark visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Germany, first established on 5 July 1966. The timing reinforces President Muizzu’s broader foreign policy approach of strengthening strategic partnerships, amplifying the Maldives’ global voice on climate and ocean affairs, and positioning the country as a credible, forward-looking partner on the international stage.
