President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced his plan to propose a constitutional amendment that would allow presidential and parliamentary elections to be held simultaneously, a move he described as a major step towards reforming the nation’s political system.
Speaking to residents of AA. Mathiveri on Tuesday night, during his ongoing tour of Alif Alif Atoll, the President confirmed that the proposal will be submitted in the upcoming parliamentary term. He emphasized that the amendment will also require a nationwide referendum, giving the people the final say on whether the two elections should be combined.
“This amendment will go to a public referendum. If the people approve, both elections will be held together. The goal is to make the system easier, less costly, and more beneficial to citizens” President Muizzu said.
The President underscored that the initiative stems from his broader vision to modernize governance and eliminate unnecessary burdens placed on the people by outdated processes. He noted that holding elections separately is expensive and inefficient, adding that reforms must reflect the aspirations of Maldivians while producing tangible benefits.
In addition to the election reform, President Muizzu revealed that he will propose further constitutional changes during the next parliamentary term. These include abolishing atoll councils and reducing the size of island councils—measures he said are designed to streamline governance and improve service delivery at the community level.
President Muizzu’s remarks highlight his administration’s commitment to restructuring governance in line with public needs, ensuring efficiency, and fostering national progress. With a referendum giving Maldivians the ultimate decision, the proposed reforms aim to empower citizens while strengthening democratic processes in the Maldives.
