President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed his government’s commitment to equitable national development during a historic gathering with the people of Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo Feydhoo, and Feydhoo on Wednesday night. Addressing thousands of residents, the President declared that his administration will ensure every inhabited island receives the same level of government services long concentrated in Malé.

“The fundamental belief guiding my government is that every citizen is equal,” President Muizzu said. “We are systematically extending services once exclusive to Malé—such as ID card issuance, passport services, and banking facilities—to every atoll and island.”
30-Megawatt Power Project to End Chronic Electricity Shortages
Highlighting Addu’s long-standing power challenges, President Muizzu announced a landmark initiative to establish a 30-megawatt power capacity—a project he described as a “comprehensive, permanent solution.” Preparatory administrative and technical works have already commenced, and the project is expected to be awarded soon.

“Temporary fixes will not solve Addu’s electricity problem,” he said. “This project will transform energy reliability for homes, businesses, and the airport.”
Citywide Road Development and Urban Renewal
The President confirmed that road construction and utility works are underway across all districts, including reclaimed areas in Feydhoo and major links in Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, and Maradhoo Feydhoo.
“I promised to build every road in this city — and we will not stop until all are complete,” he pledged, emphasizing that these developments will ease transport, boost local commerce, and attract investors.
Southern Development Zone and Job Creation
Dr. Muizzu outlined his administration’s regional development strategy, integrating the four southern atolls into a unified economic zone. The plan, he said, would establish “pull-factor cities” providing high-quality education, healthcare, employment, and housing opportunities to reduce migration pressure on Malé.

To accelerate tourism-led job creation, the President assigned MTDC to develop 600 rooms under the Coastal Tourism Project and announced that Shangri-La Resort will reopen by December 31. The long-delayed Hankede tourism project was also revived, with a foreign developer now committed to constructing up to 3,000 resort beds in phases.
“These projects will generate sustainable employment and revive Addu’s tourism economy,” he added.
“Development Through Fairness and Unity”
Concluding his address, President Muizzu emphasized that the government’s reforms aim to restore fairness, stability, and prosperity across the nation.

“All this progress is possible because of your support,” he told the crowd. “This government stands for equal opportunity — for every island, every family, and every citizen of the Maldives.”
