By Ahmed Ashraf Published 14 hours ago

The Government of Maldives has today signed 206 new projects worth MVR 2.71 billion under the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP), marking one of the largest-ever investment commitments with private Maldivian contractors.

The signing ceremony, held at Barceló Nasandhura Malé, symbolizes President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s determination to expand island-level services, empower local enterprises, and fast-track infrastructure delivery across all regions of the country.

According to the President’s Office, the newly signed portfolio spans housing, education, health, waste management, sports facilities, police infrastructure, mosques, and other essential community developments. All projects will be implemented through an investor-finance model, enabling immediate mobilisation by contractors while ensuring payments are linked to measurable project milestones.

“This model not only accelerates delivery but strengthens private sector participation in our national development journey,” President Muizzu said, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to enriching the lives of ordinary citizens through tangible progress.

Comprehensive Development Across Sectors

The 206 projects encompass every atoll and represent a holistic approach to national development:

  • Housing and Urban Development: 13 projects valued at MVR 997.38 million, including new housing units and harbour development to improve living standards and connectivity.
  • Education: 26 projects worth MVR 397.25 million, featuring new school buildings, multipurpose halls, laboratories, and the “Cool School” air-conditioning initiative.
  • Health: 30 projects valued at MVR 312.21 million, expanding healthcare infrastructure through new hospitals and upgraded health centres equipped for outpatient and diagnostic services.
  • Tourism, Environment, and Waste Management: 24 projects amounting to MVR 204.27 million, including the establishment of Waste and Resource Management Centres (WRMCs) and procurement of waste transfer vessels.
  • Sports and Recreation: 52 projects totaling MVR 197.30 million, focusing on developing turf grounds, lighting systems, and multipurpose sports complexes.
  • Islamic Affairs: 14 projects worth MVR 196.43 million, including the construction of mosques, Quran learning centres, and multipurpose waqf facilities.
  • Fisheries and Ocean Resources: Two projects worth MVR 131.87 million dedicated to reclamation and fisheries-related infrastructure.
  • Homeland Security and Technology: 39 projects totaling MVR 114.99 million, for new police stations and posts across the islands to enhance safety.
  • Higher Education and Skills Development: Five projects worth MVR 114.52 million, including university campuses and hostels in regional atolls.
  • Youth Empowerment and the Arts: A MVR 40 million initiative to establish “Third Spaces” in four cities to foster youth creativity, learning, and community engagement.

Local Empowerment and Accountability

More than 50 Maldivian contracting firms were awarded these projects following a transparent selection process. Mobilisation is set to begin immediately in accordance with signed agreements and financing schedules.

All initiatives will follow PSIP standards, with clearly defined scopes, timelines, and milestone-based disbursements to ensure transparency and efficiency. Enhanced monitoring and audit mechanisms will safeguard value for money and guarantee timely completion.

Through this extensive national rollout, President Muizzu’s administration reaffirms its vision of decentralized development and citizen-focused progress, ensuring that prosperity reaches every island and every household in the Maldives.
