President Muizzu’s National Service Drive Attracts More Than 1,200 Young Patriots

By Ahmed Ashraf Published July 8, 2025

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that 1,244 young citizens have applied for the initial round of the newly inaugurated Maldives National Service (Dhivehi Wathanee Khidhumaiy), launched under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. All applicants deemed physically and medically fit will be accepted, in the exact sequence of their applications, ensuring full intake coverage.

The Ministry has pledged that admission into the training will proceed in consecutive batches: as soon as one group completes the program, the next will begin without delay. Applicants and their guardians will receive official notification of their placement, including those on reserve lists.

To increase accessibility, the national selection process is being decentralised. Applicants can complete their selection at regional centres most convenient to them.

This program, introduced by President Muizzu and announced during last year’s Victory Day ceremony, aims to build a generation that is “disciplined, strong, well-trained, and spiritually grounded”. It forms part of a broader national strategy to nurture patriotic citizenship and improve youth resilience in the face of crises.

On 29 May 2025, the President officially designated the Ministry of Defence as the executive authority for the National Service via Directive 8/2025. The Ministry has since been tasked with creating operational rules, managing enrolment and training, and overseeing all administrative and logistical affairs related to the program.

Through this initiative, the government seeks to cultivate a morally upright, physically fit, and mentally resilient youth population, prepared to serve the nation and respond to future challenges. As the inaugural batch prepares to begin, the Ministry’s transparent and structured approach underscores its commitment to orderly and effective implementation.
