In a landmark step towards decentralization and citizen convenience, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has successfully launched passport and national ID card services across all atolls of the Maldives — a fulfillment of one of his key presidential pledges.
The initiative, completed during the President’s official visit to Alif Dhaalu Atoll, marks the first time in the nation’s history that passport services have become accessible to residents of every atoll. The official ceremony took place in ADh. Mahibadhoo, where President Muizzu was presented with a commemorative plaque by Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan to mark this achievement.

Before this reform, citizens were required to travel to Malé — often at considerable expense — to obtain essential documents such as passports. Until late last year, passport services were limited to a few select locations, including Hulhumalé Phase 1 and 2, Vilimalé, L. Fonadhoo, and Dh. Kudahuvadhoo. Similarly, ID card services were previously confined to a handful of islands.
Recognizing the hardship this posed to island communities, President Muizzu’s government launched a nationwide rollout in November 2024 to extend these critical services to every atoll. With the inclusion of Mahibadhoo, that vision has now been fully realized.
This milestone underscores the administration’s firm commitment to equitable service delivery and inclusive development — ensuring that every Maldivian, regardless of where they live, can access essential state services without leaving their home atoll.
“This is a government of action — one that listens to the people and delivers on its word,” President Muizzu said, reaffirming his vision to bring public services closer to every citizen.
The achievement not only enhances efficiency in government service delivery but also symbolizes a broader shift towards a more decentralized and citizen-focused Maldives.
