The government’s flagship Rasmalé land reclamation project has reached a 47 per cent completion rate at Site A, with 64 hectares reclaimed of the planned 138 hectares, Maldives Airports Company Limited reported. The accelerated works support President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s bold agenda to tackle housing shortages in the Greater Malé Region.

Reclamation at Site A began on 1 December 2025, overseen by MACL and executed using the Cristóbal Colón, one of the world’s largest Trailer Suction Hopper Dredgers with a 46,000-cubic-metre capacity, under contract with Jan De Nul. This specialised equipment has enabled rapid advancement of works amid national urgency for new land.
During a recent visit to the Rasmale’ site, President Muizzu inspected progress and reiterated the project’s role in his broader development strategy, positioning the reclamation as a cornerstone for new housing and urban expansion.

Muizzu has framed the Rasmalé initiative as central to delivering housing solutions for thousands of Maldivian families, promising the allocation of 15,000 plots from the reclaimed land within months of completion. The administration’s vision places emphasis on expanding land availability near the capital to ease chronic housing constraints and support long-term regional growth.
Government sources indicate accelerated effort remains underway, with plans to mobilise additional dredgers and maintain momentum so the reclamation phase of Site A wraps up as scheduled by March 2026.
As the project advances, officials and analysts observe its potential to reshape the Greater Malé urban landscape and support broader socioeconomic objectives tied to national development priorities. Future updates from MACL and the President’s Office are expected as progress continues.
