Presidential Address 2026: Muizzu expands global partnerships without compromise

By Ahmed Ashraf Published February 5, 2026

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the Maldives’ foreign relations while safeguarding the nation’s faith, sovereignty, and defence, positioning diplomacy as a key pillar of national resilience and progress.

Addressing the People’s Majlis, the President outlined a foreign policy approach grounded in the “Maldives First” doctrine, emphasizing closer engagement with neighbouring countries and Islamic nations, alongside expanded cooperation with international partners to unlock trade and economic opportunities.

President Muizzu stressed that the administration’s diplomatic strategy is guided by consultation, mutual respect, and the refined values of diplomacy, ensuring that all international engagements serve the interests of the Maldivian people. Elevating the Maldives’ stature on the global stage, he said, remains a central objective of the government’s external relations.

Under the Maldives First policy, the administration has actively collaborated with countries and international organisations that respect the Maldives’ heritage and sovereignty, delivering tangible diplomatic and economic gains over the past year. The President highlighted that reducing reliance on any single country or a limited group of partners has strengthened national independence and enhanced global confidence in the Maldives.

This balanced and principled foreign policy approach, President Muizzu noted, has earned the Maldives increased international respect, reinforcing its image as an influential, sovereign, and proactive nation in regional and global affairs.

The address positions the Muizzu administration’s diplomacy as one that blends faith, sovereignty, and strategic engagement, ensuring the Maldives remains secure, respected, and firmly guided by the national interest.
